Employment Opportunity:

Kwusen invites applications for an Indigenous Data Sovereignty Assistant. This is a full-time, entry-level position based in Kwusen’s office in downtown Victoria, BC (on Songhees and Esquimalt territory). 

The successful candidate will provide support to staff at Indigenous nations using Kwusen’s web-based mapping technologies including the Community KnowledgeKeeper (CKK) (a research data and consultations management system), NationsConnect (a web portal for inter-governmental communication) andGeoKeeper (an environmental monitoring and field data collection app). 

Reporting to the Digital Services Manager, you will work with cross-functional teams to support Indigenous communities conducting research and documentation of Indigenous Rights, Title, and land use. As part of a company that works exclusively with Indigenous Nations, you will contribute to Indigenous data sovereignty and support Nations conducting Rights-based research with digital tools across Canada. You will also work with our team to support Indigenous communities conducting research and data analysis related to climate change, environmental monitoring, land use, and Indigenous participation in Environmental Assessment processes. 

Job Duties Include:

  • Work closely with Indigenous community staff to support their work on land and resource governance

  • Provide assistance to Indigenous nations in repatriating and archiving records of their Indigenous knowledge and history 

  • Supporting our Research Team in conducting community-based research projects related to Indigenous Rights and Title

  • Support our Digital Services Team in provision of trainings and other capacity building initiatives with Indigenous communities

  • Support our Development Team to assist in product maintenance, testing and support

  • Use Google Earth and/or GIS software for basic mapping purposes

  • Complete archival research and advanced thematic coding of interview transcripts

  • Graphic design and video/audio editing using Adobe Creative Suite

  • Coordinate Kwusen communications – both external and client-facing 

  • General office and administrative duties as required

What you bring:

  • Demonstrated interest in Indigenous Rights, Indigenous land management, and environmental assessments with Indigenous communities in Canada

  • Experience supporting researchers or project leaders in an academic, industrial, or community setting

  • Demonstrated understanding of the cultural knowledge and communication skills required to connect with Indigenous communities.

  • Ability to work independently to complete tasks with great attention to detail

  • Ability to listen and clearly communicate technical details and build rapport with people of diverse backgrounds

  • Proficiency with MS Office, Google Suite, and/or Adobe Creative Suite

  • Experience in marketing and content management

  • Experience completing digital data entry

  • A social sciences (anthropology, history, geography or similar) Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training and/or related experience
